The winner here almost certainly runs into Daniil Medvedev, which gives this opener more weight than the names suggest.

Zhizhen Zhang has had a difficult season. He has struggled to find wins even at Challenger level, and the confidence that carried him into the top 60 has drained away. He remains capable of big serving days and his forehand is still a weapon, but backing a player who cannot string results together at a lower tier is hard to justify.

Coleman Wong is moving in the opposite direction. The Hong Kong player has been one of the more encouraging stories in Asian tennis this year, and his serve plus aggressive forehand combination is well suited to the quick Hangzhou surface. When those two shots are working he can take control of rallies inside three strokes.

Both players will have local support, which largely cancels out. What does not cancel out is form, and Wong has considerably more of it right now.

Wong in straight sets, with Zhang's serve the only realistic route to an upset.
