Xinyu Wang produced the cleanest win of the Singapore first round, taking out eighth seed Donna Vekic 6-1, 6-2 in under an hour of actual tennis. That scoreline matters more than the ranking comparison here. Wang was hitting through the court from the opening game and Vekic never found a way to slow her down.
Joanna Garland came through qualifying and then survived a three-setter against wild card Storm Hunter, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. She has been competitive all week but the workload is uneven. Hunter pushed her into a full decider and Wang has had considerably more rest.
The indoor hard court at OCBC Arena suits Wang's game. There is no wind, the bounce is consistent, and her flat two-handed backhand becomes very difficult to defend when she is stepping inside the baseline. Garland's route back into points is depth and variety, but she needs Wang to miss rather than forcing the error herself.
Wang's serve is the swing factor. She held comfortably against Vekic and if that carries over this should be short.
Wang in straight sets.
